West Shore Jr./Sr. High School to Host Informational Meetings 

MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – West Shore Jr./Sr. High, an open enrollment  school of choice for students in grades 7 – 12 located at 250 Wildcat Alley in Melbourne, will be hosting parent and student informational meetings about the school, curriculum, application and enrollment procedures on Tuesday, January 17, 2012, and Wednesday, January 18, 2012 at 6:30 p.m. in the gymnasium.  The school will host tours January 25, 2012, through January 27, 2012, at 8:55 AM and 1:45 PM each day, beginning in the auditorium. Tours are for prospective parents and/or students who may wish to visit the school. 

This National Blue Ribbon School’s motto is “Excellence Achieved,” which is why it attracts ambitious students seeking a challenging middle school and high school experience. Students work towards earning a Diploma of Distinction by taking accelerated classes in a nurturing environment with smaller class sizes.

Each student working towards a Diploma of Distinction is required to complete two Accelerations, advanced classes for extra credit, to graduate. Students can choose to complete one Acceleration in middle school or complete both Accelerations in high school. In middle school, these accelerated courses include Foreign Language, Algebra I Honors, Geometry Honors, or Biology Honors. In high school, students can take college-level classes including Advanced Placement and Dual Enrollment classes or computer based courses through Brevard Virtual School. Technology is equally important as textbooks in a student’s learning experience. An open computer lab and mobile laptop lab give students daily use of computers in all areas of study from foreign language to graphic design and internet access to research class projects. Many teachers also post homework assignments online for students and parents to access on the school’s website.

Applications for the 2012-2013 school year and informational brochures will be available beginning January 9, 2012 in the front office at West Shore, all elementary schools from the feeder chains, The Customer Service Center in Viera, and the district office of School Choice. Applications will be accepted until 4:00 PM on February 3, 2012. If applications exceed available space, there will be a lottery for acceptance on February 16, 2012.  Siblings of students currently enrolled at West Shore will receive enrollment preference based on certain provisions.  Sibling applications must be received by the official deadline of February 3, 2012.
