BPS Adds Five Additional CAPE Academies VIERA, FLORIDA –Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is proud to announce that five additional career academies have been registered with the Florida Department of Education as CAPE Academies; bringing the BPS total to 15 CAPE Academies. The Florida Career and Professional Education (CAPE) Act of 2007 was created to provide a statewide plan for career academies.
Career academies who wish to be designated as CAPE academies must meet 11 specific programmatic criteria outlined in legislation. Prior to registration, a rubric was created to determine those BPS career academies best aligned with the 11 CAPE Act requirements. One requirement for becoming a CAPE Academy is that the career academy courses result in an industry certification identified on the Agency for Workforce Innovation (AWI) Comprehensive Industry Certification List and the FL DOE Industry Certification Funding List. Once the list of potential CAPE academies was finalized, Erika McLaren, Career and Technical Education resource teacher contacted the high school principal to discuss CAPE academy requirements and benefits. CAPE academies are registered annually. BPS has a total of 26 career academies for the 2011-2012 school year.
