MHS Jefferson Leadership Awards Winner MELBOURNE, FLORIDA – Pamela Duran has been selected as Melbourne High School’s (MHS) Jefferson Leadership Awards Winner for September 2011. She is the school’s first winner since starting the program. The MHS Jefferson Awards Students in Action Committee selects students from nominations for community service activities that have an impact within the community. Duran put together a set of skits using Kids on the Block Puppets to show elementary school students that just because someone has a disability or is handicapped, they are just like normal children and should not be treated any differently. She performed many shows, reaching out to over 300 children at five elementary schools. The Jefferson Awards are a prestigious national recognition system honoring community and public service in America. The Jefferson Awards are presented on two levels: national and local. They began in 1972 to create a Nobel Prize for public service. Today, their primary purpose is to serve as a "Call to Action for Volunteers" in local communities. - BPS - PHOTO ATTACHED: from right to left, Mr. Wilcoxon, Melbourne High School Principal, Pamela Duran, and Mr. Houck, Jefferson Awards Team Leader
