Atlantis Elementary Teacher Earns Artsonia’s 2010-2011 Leadership Award
COCOA, FLORIDA – Mrs. Christie Berrier, an Atlantis Elementary School teacher, joins nine other art teachers in Florida to earn Artsonia’s 2010-2011 Leadership Award. The Artsonia Leadership Award honors teachers who go beyond the classroom walls to encourage family and community involvement in Arts Education. The award also recognizes significant achievement in the area of technology integration within the school arts program. “We are so proud of Mrs. Berrier’s commitment to excellence in art education here at Atlantis,” exclaimed Principal Sherry Tomlinson. Atlantis Elementary School’s online art gallery ranks #9 in the state. These results are based on the number of artwork published in the gallery, as well as community involvement statistics such as comments, artist statements, fan club members, and fundraising activity. Atlantis Elementary had 1,534 artwork published, 833 active fan club members, 171 comments left for the artists, and 252 artist statements about their artwork published on the online gallery, Artsonia, during the 2010-2011 school year.
About Christie Berrier Berrier graduated from the University of Oklahoma with Bachelors of Arts in Anthropology and Film and Video Studies and a Masters in Education. She loves all types of art including Impressionist paintings, African sculpture, and kinetic sculpture. One of her all time favorite artists is Dale Chihuly and his blown glass. Berrier has been the art teacher at Atlantis since 2005. She guided the visual arts department at Atlantis to attain the Brevard Cultural Alliance's Excellence in Visual Arts Award two times 2007-2010 and 2010-2013. She was Atlantis Elementary's 2009 Teacher of the Year. Berrier loves to integrate math, language arts, social studies, economics, and science into her art classroom. In early 2009 she took student art/science experiments into microgravity as part of Space Florida and ZeroG. Like a virtual children's art museum, Artsonia is an online collection of children’s artwork from around the world. Children can take the masterpieces they've created and upload them onto the website. Family and friends can then visit the artwork and participate in activities that allow them to take an active role in a child's art education, even if they live far away. There is no cost to participate, and Artsonia currently has artwork from children in over 100 countries. Artsonia is a Chicago-based company and was recognized by the National Art Education Association (NAEA) in 2005 for its outstanding contribution to art education in the United States.
