Florida Foreign Language Association Conference VIERA— The Florida Foreign Language Association is joining Brevard Public Schools to host its annual conference at The Radisson Resort in Cape Canaveral, October 13-15, 2011. The purpose of this conference is to bring together teachers, administrators, legislators and business leaders from throughout the state for three days of collaborative professional development and panel discussions that will highlight the importance of languages and intercultural knowledge in the education and business worlds of our global society.
The conference will begin on Thursday, Oct. 13 with a welcoming reception and screening of the documentary Speaking in Tongues. This documentary follows four students as they pursue becoming bilingual and explores the following question: Today, is one language enough? During the conference, there will be several panel discussions led by such key figures as Jon McBride, retired astronaut; Colonel Daniel L. Scott, Commandant, Defense Language Institute; Robert Peek, Director of Marketing at Jacksonville Port Authority; Nancy Simmons, President of Aero Industries; and Emily Spinelli, Executive Director, National Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese. There are many local businesses and residents involved and excited about this conference and partnership. This is the first time such a conference has been held in Brevard County. There will be approximately 1,000 attendees and is an opportunity to highlight Brevard Public Schools and share all the great things that the Space Coast has to offer to ALL Florida residents.
