Seven BPS Schools Receive Fuel Up To Play 60 Grants for Wellness Initiatives Viera, FLORIDA – Sponsored by the National Dairy Council and the NFL seven BPS schools were awarded $3,000 each to implement nutrition and wellness activities. The program encourages youth to consume nutrient-rich foods (low-fat and fat-free dairy, fruits, vegetables and whole grains) and achieve 60 minutes of physical activity every day. The schools awarded include: Apollo Elementary School, DeLaura Middle School, Imperial Estates Elementary, Melbourne High School, Ocean Breeze Elementary, Theodore Roosevelt Elementary and Quest Elementary. Fuel Up to Play 60 has awarded $2,817,927 nationally since the program started, providing 1,168 grants. Florida has received $171,500 in grants for 49 schools since it started through the four funding opportunities throughout the school years. During the last funding opportunity in June 2011, Florida was awarded $99,000 in grants for 39 schools of which BPS received 7 of them. This program has been brought to the schools with a partnership from Food and Nutrition Services. The District Dietitian Specialist works with individual schools designing grants to carry out nutrition and physical activity ideas presented in the program. Based on the activities each school selects, assistance is provided in resources and expertise to create well rounded sustainable student driven wellness programs. Six of the seven school recipients also had the assistance from a community Registered Dietitian from March 2011-October 2011. Kids Eat Right, sponsored by the American Dietitian Association made this partnership with RD’s and schools possible. Each school designed their grant based on wellness initiatives they would like to grow or make available in their school. Ideas range in each school involved, but all include a physical activity and nutrition component. Nutrition activities that will be taking place include: taste testing, milk mustache booths, themed nutrition decorations for the cafeteria, special breakfast events, healthy snack contests, nutrition articles for newsletters, school gardens, a weekend backpack program and nutrition education kits. Physical Education activities that will be taking place include: Stop and Go signs around the school with physical activities, in class activity through morning announcements, family wellness nights, creating physical activity DVD’s for classroom use, walking clubs, creating activity zones, fitness centers and offering a variety of aerobic classes. -BPS- Attachments: Photos of the seven school recipients
