Out-of-Area Procedures for the 2012-2013 School Year
VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools provides families with the opportunity to choose educational programs for their children. In addition to the array of choice schools/programs, including Career and Technical Education (CTE), parents may complete an Out-of-Area Form for their children to attend a school other than their zoned school. All Out-of-Area Forms must be submitted to the appropriate schools by the designated timelines. Listed at the bottom of this press release is additional information parents will need when completing an Out-of-Area Form. This information includes charts with a list of schools that are frozen to incoming/outgoing students and cannot be selected for out-of-area, as well as a list of schools whose students will be given “grandfathered” status for the 2012-2013 school year. The Out-of-Area Form is located on the district’s website under the heading BPS Highlights, (http://www.brevardschools.org). Parents must complete the Out-of-Area Form accurately and in its entirety as defined in the following categories: Renewal and “Grandfathered” Students Out-of-Area Accepting Out-of-Area Forms from February 15, 2012 – March 9, 2012 A student currently attending a school as an out-of-area student must apply each year. Students being given “grandfathered” status in the recent boundary changes must also complete an Out-of-Area Form. The district Out-of-Area Form must be accurately completed and submitted by the specified deadline to the school the student attended during 2011-2012 school year. New Out-of-Area for Students That Attended Brevard Public Schools during the 2011-2012 School Year Accepting Out-of-Area Forms from March 12, 2012 - April 13, 2012 A student that attended Brevard Public Schools in 2011-2012 may apply for a new out-of-area. The district Out-of-Area Form must be accurately completed and submitted by the specified deadline to the school the student is assigned to in accordance to his/her home address. Out-of-Area for New Students to Brevard Public Schools Accepting Out-of-Area Forms from May 7, 2012 – June 18, 2012 A student new to Brevard Public Schools, including kindergarten students, may apply for out-of-area. The district Out-of-Area Form must be accurately completed and submitted by the specified deadline to the school the student is assigned to in accordance to his/her home address. Out-of-Area Approval/Denial Notification Pursuant to Brevard Public Schools Policy 7120, the Director of School Choice will make the final decision regarding the approval or denial of out-of-area requests. It is important to understand that decisions will be made in accordance to district policy. Moreover, school capacity and the ability to comply with the Class Size Constitutional Mandate are critical factors in determining the final decision. Notification regarding the approval/denial of an out-of-area request for the 2012-2013 school year will be made by the school the student is assigned to for the 2012-2013 school year. Parents may submit an appeal to the Office of School Choice for an out-of-area request that is denied. 2012-2013 Out-of-Area Appeal Procedures Parents must follow the following procedures when requesting an appeal to an out-of-area decision: 1. Complete the 2012-2013 Out-of-Area Appeal Form by the stipulated deadline. The form is available at http://schoolchoice.brevard.k12.fl.us/more/controlled.htm. a. Provide information/reason(s) to be considered for the appeal. b. In cases of severe health problems, a letter of explanation and statement by a licensed physician should be attached. c. Additional paper may be used, if needed. 2. The 2012-2013 Out-of-Area Appeal Form is due to the Office of School Choice by: June 15, 2012 For Out-of-Area Requests Submitted by Current Students Attending Brevard Public Schools (BPS) during the 2011-2012 School Year. July 13, 2012 For Out-of-Area Requests Submitted by New Students Planning to Attend Brevard Public Schools (BPS) for the 2012-2013 School Year. 3. Please mail or hand deliver the Out-of-Area Appeal Form to: Brevard Public Schools Office of School Choice 2700 Judge Fran Jamieson Way Viera, FL 32940-6601 4. The 2012-2013 Out-of-Area Appeal Forms will be reviewed by a District Appeal Team, which will carefully evaluate all information provided by parents and school administrators. Parents may not participate in the meeting; therefore, it is critical that the Out-of-Area Appeal Form contains detailed information regarding why a student should be permitted to attend the requested school. 5. Only information submitted in writing on/with the Out-of-Area Appeal Form will be considered when making the final decision. Therefore, parents should not call the Office of School Choice to provide details regarding the appeal. 6. The decision of the District Appeal Team is final. Parents will be notified by mail of the final decision prior to the beginning of the 2021-2013 school year. Schools Frozen to Incoming and Outgoing Out-of-Area Students The information included in the following charts lists schools that are frozen to incoming/outgoing students and cannot be selected for out-of-area.

Schools whose Students will be given “Grandfathered” Status for the 2012-2013 School Year Pursuant to action taken by the School Board of Brevard County on January 24, 2012, the students attending the schools listed below will be given “grandfathered” status for the 2012-2013 school year. A “grandfathered” student may remain at his/her current school and does not have to move to the school designated in the adopted boundary changes. Please understand that transportation will not be provided for “grandfathered” students. Also, siblings of “grandfathered” students are not eligible to remain at their current school under this exception. A student wishing to be granted “grandfathered” status for the 2012-2013 school year MUST submit an Out-of-Area Form to his/her current school by March 9, 2012.
