BPS is 8th out of 67 FL Districts for Student Achievement

VIERA, FLORIDA – Brevard Public Schools (BPS) is 8th out of 67 Florida School Districts according to rankings released today by State Education Commissioner Gerard Robinson.  At the request of Gov. Rick Scott, Commissioner Robinson ranked Florida’s 67 school districts by student achievement based on Florida Comprehensive Assessment Test (FCAT) scores as reflected in total number of points earned on the district school grade.  In 2011, Brevard earned 566 total school grade points for a school grade of A.

With over 73,000 students, Brevard Public Schools is the 10th largest district in Florida and the 47th largest district in the nation.  Brevard had the highest ranking of the 10 largest of Florida’s 67 districts.  According to school grade data released by the Florida Department of Education (FLDOE), of BPS’ 86 schools, 84 or 98% earned an A or a B. 

Other accolades for Brevard Public Schools include the following:

  • ACT scores for BPS are above state average in each area. (BPS requires all 11th grade students to take ACT; while other districts only have their college bound students take the test.)

  • SAT scores for BPS students are above the state and national averages.

  • Brevard Public Schools’ sixth grade students rank first in Florida in both reading and mathematics on FCAT.

  • Five Brevard schools earned the prestigious EVA for 2011-2014.

  • Brevard Public Schools now has 19 out of 20 schools in Florida recognized as National Model School of Professional Learning Communities (PLCs) at Work.

  • Brevard now has 19 of the 21 Music Demonstration Schools statewide.

  • Newsweek printed an article on the best high schools in the country with four Brevard County schools being in the top 500 for 2011 (West Shore, 44th; Edgewood, 119th; Cocoa Beach, 199th; and Satellite 371st). 

  • Brevard Public Schools received four of the state’s eight 2011 Florida Power-Library Schools (FPLS) Awards.

  • Three Brevard Schools recognized by the University of South Florida as Positive Behavior Support Model Schools.

  • BPS has been 100% compliant with Florida’s Class Size Amendment requirements every year since it was voted into law.

  • The 2011 AARP Best Employers for Workers Over 50 list ranks BPS 20th among the top 50 employers in the nation.
